Who Can Be A Discipler?
All mature Christians.
How maturity is defined (the 1 Timothy 4:12 test):
Is your life an example for believers in...
1. Speech saturated with God's grace
2. Life (Conduct) by the way you stand firm for Christ
3. Love for people you like and people you don't like
4. Faith through the bold steps you take for God's glory
5. Purity in your personal life and relationships
We highly recommend getting the advice of a Christian or two who is more mature in their faith before submitting an application to be a discipler.
Note: If you are a current UMBC student who is seeking to be a discipler, there is also a requirement that you are either currently being discipled or are actively seeking out a discipler for yourself.
Being A Discipler
Scripture indicates that discipleship consists of:
Example Setting
Living in such a way that your life is a tangible example of what it means be Jesus' disciple (1 Corinthians 11:1, 1 Timothy 4:12).
Note: This takes time with the other person seeing you as well as your openness to helping them understand what they see.
Scripture
Speaking in such a way that, through the Holy Spirit, they understand more of who God is and how Jesus is applied to their life (Matthew 7:24, Philippians 4:9). Knowing and speaking truths from the Bible is key in this (Luke 11:28, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).
Great Joy
This is through praising God for doing the work (Proverbs 2:6-8, 1 Corinthians 3:6-7) and being filled with joy to see this work and be God's instrument in it (1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, 3 John 1:3-4).
